Is Scanner Society Worth The Money?

I hear this question a lot whether it stated outright or implied. Obviously, I think it is, not just because I’ve dedicated so much of my life to it but also because, for me, the relationships that I’ve made alone are MORE than worth it. However, I realize this is a sort of “airy fairy” way of describing the value so I decided to compare it to a conference.

In many businesses, including the online seller/e-commerce world it is widely held to be true that attending at least one conference a year is a worthwhile investment.

What have I heard people say they get out of conferences? Here are a few phrases, I’ve heard over and over…

  • “The networking alone is worth it”
  • “If I get just one or two great tips that help me grow my business it’s worth it”
  • “This business is so isolating, it’s just inspiring to see what’s out there and what other people are doing”

There are probably lots of other benefits but I’m going to go with these three as they are the ones I hear the most. So I want to do an approximate spend breakdown of a few conferences vs Scanner Society as our loyal membership of over 700 people feel that they get at least the above from our group as well.

Types of Conferences

Regional / Low Cost E-Commerce: These are usually attended by a large segment of resellers who can drive or hop an easy flight. The conference fee is usually under $300 and the hotel is a mid range one. eComChicago and Rocky Mountain Reseller Conference are both good examples of these. Here is a breakdown of costs that is on the LOW side:

  • Conference: $200 (Includes lunch)
  • 2 Nights Hotel: $200 (Includes breakfast)
  • Dinner & Drinks for 2 Nights: $90
  • Travel: $10 – $200 (car – plane)
  • Total spent for 2-3 days: $500 – $700

Premium E-Commerce: These are in large metro areas such as New York or Las Vegas and tend to have higher expenses due to a more “premium” speaker line up and an nicer location. They are trying to attract larger volume businesses. Retail Global and Prosper are both good examples of these. Here is a breakdown of costs that is on the LOW side.

  • Conference: $800 (Includes lunch)
  • 2 Nights Hotel: $200
  • Breakfast, Dinner & Drinks for 2 Nights: $200
  • Travel: $$10 – $400 (car – plane)
  • Tips/Parking/Lyft: $90
  • Total spent for 2-3 days: $1300  – $1700

There are lots of other trips that people make for business including to specialty conferences that are for an e-commerce niche or just marketing. Additionally we travel for trade shows often too which can be free to attend but still involve meals, hotels and travel expenses.

This article is not to promote or dissuade attendance at any event simply to point out that at a dollar per dollar spent, Scanner Society, at $399 a year is a terrific investment. We deliver on each of those three benefits and have the opportunity available 24/7. Like anything, the more you put in, them the more you’ll get out, but in general, I can with total certainty guarantee that with a minimal amount of effort our organization provides AT LEAST this value.

  • “The networking alone is worth it”
  • “If I get just one or two great tips that help me grow my business it’s worth it”
  • “This business is so isolating, it’s just inspiring to see what’s out there and what other people are doing”

So whether are currently a member or considering it, please participate, be involved, ask, share, read, listen and help. You will realize far more return than the money spent on our membership.
