Amazon Logistics – Be Part Of Amazon’s Uber Of Last Mile Shipping

Amazon Logistics Steps

Amazon has announced a new program to try to cut costs with UPS and FedEx. They are trying to solve the last hour shipping challenge the same way they solved an inventory shortage issue in 2006. They announced today a new program, called AMAZON LOGISTICS to help entrepreneurs run their own shipping companies. They will provide access to delivery technology, hands-on training, and discounts on a suite of assets and services, including vehicle leases and comprehensive insurance. Owners can pay to lease and buy Amazon-branded vehicles customized for delivery, branded uniforms, fuel, comprehensive insurance coverage, and more.

Amazon Logistics Business Startup DiscountsIndividuals and small businesses will assume all the risk and own all the inventory and Amazon does not have to deal with UPS or Fedex. Amazon is hoping hundreds of small business owners will hire tens of thousands of delivery drivers across the U.S. so that they don’t have to. Amazon Logistics provides technology and operational support to individuals with little to no logistics experience so that they have the “opportunity” to run their own delivery business.

They promise annual profits “as high as” 300K if you operate a fleet of up to 40 delivery vehicles. This actually seems like a lot of work and risk for that much money.

The overview of costs is a bit vague. They pay based on a combo of the number of vehicles in your fleet, the number of miles in your total routes and a per package rate based on successful delivery of packages. I wonder if it’s considered successful if the owner drops it off but the customer claims it never arrived? So the entire risk of vehicle leasing is on the owner even if the number of packages goes down.

They are incentivizing veterans to do this.

There is a pretty comprehensive 3 week training program which includes a week in Seattle.

As a third party seller, I see that they will probably start out supporting these owners but over time will raise fees and put more burden on them. For some people, this may be the right opportunity but I see a lot of chance for financial risk assumed by owners and none by Amazon.
